Darts is a sport? I would rather class it as a game, a pub game. It was quite amusing seeing Andy Fordham claiming that he was an athlete as he wore trainers though Who remembers that sketch from "Not the Nine O'Clock News" when they were going for treble whiskey's, etc?
I used to play competitively in pub leagues and was captain of our Leicester University team during 1983-5. There are lots of amusing stories from those days that still give me a giggle. Such as the time when I was throwing for a double to win one team game and one of the opposing side's girlfriend jumped in front of the board with her breasts bared to distract me At the time I was darts mad, played it any time I could. I've even went to Jollees Nightclub in Stoke On Trent, where the embassy was held till 1985.
I lost a lot of interest in it when the schism occurred in 1994, though I still watch it on and off when the Lakeside tournament is on. I haven't played it for 10 years or more though.
I can attest that darts was big news in Holland even in the mid 80s. When I was over there in 1985 there was darts everywhere, in every pub I went into. In one pub in Amsterdam I joined in on a "winner stays on" basis against the local pub team. They got a bit pissed off when I stayed on half the night and made an excuse that they needed to practice for a tournament.
Anyone know if Jockey Wilson still plays?

Bit late, but did anyone see the PDC final? Great game Taylor vs. van Barneveld.
I think Lakeside will be an English victory this year, with only one Dutch player left.

I did play 3rd rgional league in Hamburg for a few years. Was captain of the Ripleys Gang. Still do play from time to time but its enerving to find out how bad you can get when you lost routine ... though I guess I am still quite good for a hobby darter. Its funny, with some pints of Kilkenny I can even play better.
